Do Braces Cause Cavities and Do I need To Extract Teeth?
Question: My teeth are very crowded and I have had many cavities over the years. I never had braces because an orthodontist I went to suggested I should have 4 teeth removed, plus all 4 of my wisdom teeth. I did not feel comfortable having that many teeth removed. Do crowded teeth contribute to cavities, and is there are solution to straightening my teeth without having any removed?
Answer: Crowded teeth in themselves may not likely directly cause cavities. However when teeth are crowded, then it could encourage more stuck food. If your teeth were not very strong, the stuck food might contribute to tooth decay.
A misaligned by will contribute to tooth cavities. This is because improper biting can hyperstimulate the nervous system through the trigeminal nerve in your jaw. This can lower your resistance to cavities. An improper bite might also cause extra stress and force on specific areas of your teeth.
I would not recommend wisdom tooth or other extraction unless there was a medically verifiable health problem that could only be resolved through extraction.
Resolving the problem of crowded teeth may decrease your rate of cavities. The way to do this would be to see a bite professional. Either way, I suggest you improve your diet to decrease your rate of cavities, or eliminate cavities all together as described in the book "Cure Tooth Decay."

I was ready to have a tooth pulled and the dentist told me that I needed a root canal, but I had no money for either procedure. I was in pain and my cheek had already begun to swell. But after just over a month of following Ramiel's dietary protocols it is hard for me to feel which tooth was bothering me. Thanks a million to Ramiel Nagel for writing this book. Unbelievable! - Leroy, artist from Utah. |
