American Dental Association History

The American Dental Association was form in 1859 to replace the defunked American Society of Dental Surgeons. That society lasted from 1840 to 1856. At the time, it was very clear to those dentists that mercury fillings were toxic. The American Dental Association merged with Southern Dentists to form the National Dental Association in 1897. Weston Price was the head of research of the National Dental Association. Which then changed its name to the American Dental Association again in 1922. The American Society of Dental Surgeons became defunct because the people demanded lower cost more affordable fillings made with Mercury. Mercury fillings were also easier and less technically difficult to place than gold fillings. The demand for cheap dentistry, in combination with the inability for dentists to stick to using only gold, led to the destruction of the American Society of Dental Surgeons.

Today the American Dental Association still promotes mercury fillings, still claiming they are safe. The American Dental Association now has over 156,000 members. Their purpose is to expand the industry of dentistry, "The ADA is the professional association of dentists that fosters the success of a diverse membership and advances the oral health of the public."
